What is a MATV system?
The MATV (Master Antenna Television) system today refers to a centralized digital television system within a building. It uses a single antenna to receive digital terrestrial TV signals from the strongest broadcast station and distributes them to multiple viewing points within the same building or nearby areas—such as hotels, condominiums, apartments, and dormitories. This reduces the complexity of installing multiple antennas and improves signal management efficiency and stability.
However, due to frequency refarming for modern communication technologies such as 4G/LTE and 5G, MATV system design now requires equipment capable of effective LTE/4G/5G signal filtering to minimize interference and ensure clear and stable signal distribution across all viewing points.
What is an SMATV system?
SMATV (Satellite Master Antenna Television) is an extension of MATV, incorporating satellite dish reception alongside terrestrial signals. It allows both free-to-air and encrypted channels to be received and processed through modulators before being distributed throughout the building. This enables a wider range of channel offerings, making it more suitable for commercial applications such as hotels, hospitals, and condominiums.
Additionally, SMATV systems can integrate signals from various sources such as cable TV, media players, computers, or CCTV, combining them into a unified channel system. Proper design also requires LTE/4G/5G filtering to prevent interference. In practice, SMATV systems often distribute signals using DVB-T for cost efficiency, even though Thailand’s terrestrial broadcast uses DVB-T2.
What is an IPTV system?
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a system that distributes TV signals over IP networks such as LAN or the internet instead of traditional coaxial cables. This allows more flexible content management and feature expansion. IPTV can be divided into two main types:
(1) OTT IPTV
OTT (Over-the-Top) IPTV refers to internet-based streaming services such as Live TV, Netflix, or YouTube. It requires internet connectivity, offers limited content control, and may pose copyright risks. It is more suitable for personal use rather than centralized systems in hotels or hospitals.
(2) Hospitality IPTV (Hotel IPTV)
Hospitality IPTV is a centralized IPTV system designed for businesses such as hotels, hospitals, resorts, and serviced apartments. It uses a central server to manage and distribute content across rooms via an internal network.
Key features include centralized content control, in-house channels, VOD, integration with systems like PMS/HIS, customizable GUI, and the ability to generate both direct and indirect revenue. However, it requires proper system design and investment in servers, network, and software tailored to each business.
What is a CATV system?
CATV (Community Antenna Television or Cable TV) is a large-scale distribution system that combines signals from multiple sources and delivers them across a broader network—such as multiple buildings, communities, or even nationwide coverage.
Due to its scale, CATV systems are more complex and require robust infrastructure, including outdoor equipment, line amplifiers, and trunk lines to ensure consistent signal quality over long distances and varied environments.
