What is the CE Mark?

Standards Related to Data, Video, and Audio Communication Systems Part 2

Devices bearing the CE mark indicate that they comply with the safety, health, environmental, and consumer protection requirements set by the European Union (EU) standards.
CE stands for "Conformité Européenne," which is French for "European Conformity." It is a standard for electrical and electronic equipment. If a device meets the requirements and is authorized to bear the CE mark, it means that the device has been tested and found to be safe from electrical short circuits, does not generate excessive heat or pose a danger to users, does not interfere with the operation of other devices (EMC), and does not contain hazardous substances like lead or mercury beyond legal limits (RoHS).

Why is the CE Mark Important?
The CE mark helps users to be confident that equipment is safe, reliable, and meets international standards. It is one of the factors that aids in the decision-making process when choosing quality electrical and electronic equipment. While CE does not mean "best quality," it does signify that "this equipment is safe and compliant with European regulations." It helps reduce risks and increase safety. Construction projects involving the installation of electrical and electronic systems with standards often do not permit the use of non-CE compliant equipment.

CE Mark's Relevance to Standards in Thailand
In Thailand, there are two key agencies that oversee equipment standards: the NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission) and the TISI (Thai Industrial Standards Institute). The NBTC is responsible for regulating equipment related to radio frequencies and communications, such as mobile phones, radios, internet devices, and satellites, to ensure safe and non-interfering usage. The TISI is responsible for controlling and certifying Thai Industrial Standards (TIS or M.O.C.) to ensure that products sold in Thailand are of quality and safe for users, especially certain electrical and electronic devices that are legally mandated to have TIS certification before being sold.
For importers of equipment from abroad, such as electrical appliances or communication devices, if that equipment has the CE mark, which is an internationally recognized safety standard, it can help make the application for certification from Thai agencies (e.g., TIS) or permission from NBTC easier and faster. This is because the CE Certification documentation can be used as supporting information for consideration, as the CE mark demonstrates that the equipment has already met international safety standards.
