Microwaves are a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum within the radio frequency (RF) band that plays a crucial role in wireless communication, medicine, radar, satellites, household appliances, and many industrial applications. The microwave frequency band typically ranges from ~300 MHz to 300 GHz, but the most commonly used frequencies begin at 1 GHz and above. The 30–300 GHz range is known as the millimeter wave (mmWave) band due to its millimeter-level wavelength.
Bands such as Q, U, E, F, and D are additional classifications beyond the IEEE standard, often used in research and radar systems.
Microwaves have higher energy than radio waves but lower than infrared waves. They travel in straight lines, reflect off metal surfaces, and can be absorbed by water and organic materials, which makes them suitable for various applications, including cooking, communication, and sensing.
